FOP Opposes Releasing Names Of Officers Involved In Police Shootings PDF Print E-mail

On Friday, January 29, 2010, the FOP was informed the Police Commissioner was reversing the policy he implemented in late 2008 and would again begin releasing the names of our police officers who are involved in a police shooting after 48 hours of the incident.

The FOP was an early supporter of the Police Commissioner when he adjusted the policy of the BPD of releasing police officer names and stood behind him during intense media and political pressure.  Now in 2010, for no apparent reason other than a change in the City Administration, the Police Commissioner is again adjusting this policy.

The FOP is opposed to the change at this time and we believe strongly that the safety and protection of our police officers should be paramount to the BPD and that the intense investigation that takes place following a police involved shooting is in no way compromised by not releasing the names of our police officers.
